Conformity assessment and accreditation, along with standards, are important ways to give confidence in goods, services, management systems and people. They make a significant contribution to the economy, health and safety, and environment. Accreditation is a means of assessing, in the public interest, the technical competence and integrity of the organisations offering evaluation services including testing, inspection, calibration and certification. The independent assessment by organisations such as UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) provides confidence and trust in Certification by assuring the technical competence and impartiality processes in place, and hence SCS are committed to providing accredited certification services. Some schemes and/or standards do not have accredited certification, however where SCS certify relevant activities, our internal process controls will safeguard impartiality and ensure the same level of service integrity.

All auditors are practical, seasoned practitioners with relevant sector eg. Industrial and/or commercial experience, and hence have a keen understanding and focus on matters of significance. This in turn enables a working relationship which together, assures the product/service delivery, controls risk and limits adverse incidents, within a learning environment, focused on improvement. Competency is the key success factor within SCS. A competence articulates the expected outcome or performance standard that is achieved as a result of applying a combination of knowledge, personal attitude, skills and experience in a certain function or characteristic. It can be understood to represent the language of performance in System Certification Services Ltd., articulating both the expected outcomes of an individual’s efforts and the manner in which these activities are completed. The wheel of competence shown below represents the integration of all the competence elements required across the functions and roles within the audit and certification activities. The wheel signifies that competencies are cross functional as well as across the key dimensions in SCS, including safeguarding impartiality for system competence, efficient processes for service competence and technical capability through certification competence. The Competence Framework enables SCS to assess and review organisational and individual’s competence levels, analysing strengths and weaknesses to identify training and development needs.

Jim has an Msc in Quality Management from Cranfield University and is an Honorary Fellow of Chartered Quality Institute. He started his career in Quality in 1963 in the Electrical and Mechanical Sector of Heavy Industry and has worked all over the world, holding Quality Director roles prior to becoming the Managing Director of NQA, then Director General and latterly Chairman of NICEIC, then Chief Executive at IMS International before taking up the role of Certification Secretary at 'SCS' where he provides governance and assures impartiality by overseeing certification activities.
Tony has an MSc in Construction Business & Project Management and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Quality Institute. He also holds the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health and a number of other academic, vocational and professional qualifications. He has been engaged in Performance Management roles for over 25 years within the manufacturing, engineering and construction sectors, including working as a Management System Certification Auditors for a number of leading Certification Bodies prior to taking up this key role within 'SCS', overseeing operations, assisting clients, assuring the competence and performance of the audit teams and liaising with UKAS on all accreditation matters.
Tracey has a plethora of business administration vocational qualifications and has 20+ years' experience in both talent acquisition and management support roles in recruitment and business support services organisations which adds value in her role at 'SCS' where she assists in communication and auditor co-ordination to assure the client experience.
